Bangalore: The cheap rice scheme also known as “Anna Bhagya” has indeed brought a smile to the people of Karnataka as the scheme has successfully rolled out in the very first month of its introduction. This is an ambitious project where people, especially from below poverty line (BPL) will be benefited with 30 kg of rice at Re 1 per kg every month, reports ND Shiva Kumar for Times of India.Under this scheme, the government of Karnataka has the target of covering 87 lakh BPL families in the state and the scheme was introduced only when sufficient quantity of rice was obtained and transported to the respective godowns.
Though the scheme was carried out as per the promised quantity and quality, yet some unwanted incidents like diversion of rice by distributors and demand for more money (Rs 1.50 per kg) by fair price shop operators were reported in some parts. But the officials took immediate action against the offenders.
Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah cheerfully declared in the Assembly that the scheme is successful and is all set to bear the additional funding to make sure that the impoverished section gets two complete meals daily.
On the other hand, this Anna Bhagya scheme has also increased the number of ration cards in the state. Lakhs of BPL card requests are still processed by the officials concerned; out of it 15,000 cards have been issued already.
